COLOR! what's happenin'?

February 19, 2010

You might ask yourself; "Say, where did this yellow trend color come from anyway?" I love to analyze the whys & wherefores of color. "Why is lavender so right? Why does tomato red feel like the right red? " Why does yellow work? and which yellow is working? why that particular one? I’m sure you’ve all seen the color YELLOW. Nothing new there. It’s been coming for a while now…But have you looked lately? It’s everywhere. It’s like a virus.

So, let’s think about this; the easy thing to say is that when times are hard, we all look for a ray of sunshine somewhere. OK, that explains yellow perfectly, for the moment.

Next, with retro-modern settled in as a classic for furniture & home,
yellow makes sense since it is the ultimate retro color (along with aqua,
green and orange, equally appropriate colors for current color trend.)
OK, less mainstream as an explanation, but also works.

How about this: grey is a mainstay basic and THE neutral, yellow is
the best color to offset and brighten grey in the home. I like that one.

Also, yellow works with blue and aqua… don’t believe me?  look up on a sunny day! Azure sky-bright yellow sun, nothing beats that for classic.

In the coming weeks, I am going to show color trends. Starting with yellow today. It’s in and it’s big. It works with what colors are out there now  (greys, purples and lavenders) and it works with what’s coming   (brights and more brights!)
More to come……Please tell me what colors seem right for YOU! that is where trends start after all.

Gina, Agreed! I do like some pastels with certain brights. For instance, pale soft pink, with bold red or bright pink look great- imagine a soft pale pink wall, with a bold red chair, and pale grey rug- POP!

I love the contrast of the colors. The Bright yellow really pops. It is great compared to pastels that can all seem to blend together.

Hi Bridget... As usual, you are right! Yellow lifts the spirit and adds a fun attitude to anything. I can't wear it - wrong for my skin tone but love looking at it. I use it in decorating in small ways - floral accents, pillows, etc especially in spring. Our interior is creamy white with lots of blues & greens and accents of black & brown, so yellow adds a splash whenever we need to pick up our spirits. Thanks for reminding us. Jeanne Greger

Thanks David, I agree Greens are working. I am keen on teal, it seems to work so well with the yellows and grey. Thanks for your comment!

As always, beautiful pictures and though-provoking insight. I'm feeling the yellow-vibe too and I think it is because yellow is the antithesis of seriousness. We're just coming out of a long, hard, cold, dark winter and some of yellow's happy-go-lucky attitude feels innervating right now. I've been getting a similar charge out of emerald green lately. Keep an eye out for that one too.

Thanks for the inspiration Bridget! It seems like yellow has been coming on for awhile now, but suddenly it looks right.

Greetings from one of your regular Fashionistas! Wow the Bright colors are back. But glad to see them put together so much better than in the 60's. Loved the grey/lavendar tone kitchen with yellow. So clean and important looking... Also used as one important yellow/gold color in the Spa Bathroom. Think I should run right out to florist to get some Calendula flowers (with pretty green leaves and stems),it feels like Spring! It has been a long winter, thank you for the inspiration...
