No wire hangers!

July 23, 2009

Walking through Barneys home department in uptown NYC, I stopped dead in my tracks… What is that?? Do my eyes deceive me? There is the wire furniture from my kitchen when I was 8 years old.

There it was: coated, colorful wire chairs and tables. When I was a kid, we had green wire kitchen chairs, with flower shapes and a glass top table - I often wonder who is sitting at that table now. Is that it in Barneys? If not, where is it? Is it lost in some retro store near where I grew up in upstate NY? Or has some cool, savvy person found it and painted it some bright new color, and is now sitting happily at the table which brought my family together as a child. What memories flooded back when I saw so much wire furniture all over the place!

Anthropologie had their version:

ABC Carpet and Home
had all kinds of shapes and sizes of wire furniture in all of their windows:

Love the Arper leaf lounge chair…below:

Then I went to the Alemeda Flea Market here in the SF bay area and look what I found! More wire furniture! I almost had a fight with a young couple over this chaise… but they got there first, so I let them have it.

Then I found this table and chairs… flashback! I should have purchased it. I thought this would be perfect for some adorable kids boutique for a kids display of toys at a tea party.

Then the icing on the cake:

Not for sale. Where would I put it? In the store I don’t have!!! I wish I had a kids store- this treasure would hold all of my soft huggable toys.  Anyone want to start a store with me? How about it!?
Call me!!!

Bridget, what inspiration! The wire furniture has a light and airy feeling, brought in from the outdoors. My sister did that back in the 60's/70's when she brought her outdoor furniture inside for Kitchen use. Metal, of a Verdi green color with a glass top and lots of plants! Even in the cold winter, it felt like springtime in her kitchen. Many good memories from those days. The wire furniture also takes me back to the times of the Old Ice Cream Parlor table and chairs at the local Soda Bar! That was in the 1950's...Thanks again for sharing your great ideas!

Here is more info about the wire furniture at Barnies: The Re-trouvé collection designed by Patricia Urquiola for Emu. The wire is available in several colors. You can see the influence of French classical chairs in the Emu Outdoor Collection. This is not surprising since Re-trouvé translates to To Find Again. (this quote is from "at home with Kim Vallee")

Hi Lissa, Thank you! To answer your question regarding the ABC store windows- yes, they had painted the inside of the windows with some sort of spray paint, but it was more like a water dripping type of style- the theme was like the windows were revealing treasures under the sea- so the background was also painted in similar fashion- If you would like more photo's of the display, I can send them to you- email me at bridget-kelly@sbcglobal.net and I will send you photos from my library of images.

Bridget, as always, your blogs are fun and inspiring! I would love to open a store with you! Quick question: I am always looking for unusual ways for our retailers to display, did ABC spray paint the inside of their windows? Graffiti style?
