WASHINGTON — Elegant Gifts Mart Inc. of Los Angeles, a supplier of youth furniture and other home products, has agreed to voluntarily recall about 1,600 children's chairs and 1,300 children's stools due to violations of a federal lead paint standard.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the yellow surface paint on the metal frame of the chairs and stools contains excessive levels of lead paint, a violation of federal law.
The chairs were sold at 1 to Seven stores in Puerto Rico from September 2010 through June 2011.
The federal standard for lead paint in children's furniture and other products such as toys is .009 percent according to the CPSC. Items with higher lead content are considered hazardous.
The CPSC did not say by how much the paint on the chairs in question exceeded the standard.
The chairs have a yellow metal tube frame, a plastic seat and a cartoon-like scene on the heart-shaped seat back. The item number JCA8036 is printed on a white sticker underneath the chair seat and the item number JCA8037 is printed on a similar sticker beneath the seat of the stool.
Consumers have been advised to return the items to any 1 to Seven stores in Puerto Rico, or contact Elegant Gifts Mart collect at (323) 698-6805 for a refund. The number for 1 to Seven stores is (787) 290-5625.
