The line will begin shipping to dealers late this year. Smartstuff will initially include four kids' collections with innovative features and construction and affordable pricing, officials said. Named Gabriella, RoughHouse, Free Style and Classics 4.0, each collection features about 25 pieces.
Company officials did not disclose pricing, but the company said it will be 20% above Universal's sister company, Legacy Kids, and 20% to 40% below "premium" youth brands.
In creating the line, designers looked at the way kids live today and the homes they live in, a press release said.
"What will differentiate Smartstuff in the marketplace is the unbeatable combination of great styling, better construction and game changing smart features not currently found in youth furniture. Importantly, we believe Smartstuff will provide our dealers a volume generating, margin opportunity," said Jeff Scheffer, Universal Furniture CEO.
Drawer interiors will feature English dovetail joints and full finish 9/16th inch oak plywood, and will operate on a pair of ball bearing, full-extension, soft-closing, under-mount glides.
Bedrails will have 100% bolt-together construction for sturdy, wobble-free beds and finishes will be lead free, the company said.
Bunk beds will feature ladders with wide steps and deep mattress openings, and are bolted at every joint and tested by a third-party lab, Intertek.
The items will also feature charging stations, removable partitions in drawers, dresser hideaways for kids' treasures and built-in lighting. Select pieces feature coasters and clothes folding boards, among other items.
The items will be manufactured at a dedicated factory in China and warehoused in Shanghai and High Point. They can be mixed from China with other Universal product by full container or through Universal's Smart Mix program.
Premarket takes place here Sept. 12-13, about six weeks before the fall High Point Market.
