CPSC launches social media initiative

news

-- Kids Today, 10/1/2009 12:00:00 AM

Coinciding with the launch of its Furniture and TV Tip-Over Education Campaign, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is starting a new a social media initiative.

CPSC now has an “OnSafety” blog and a presence on social media sites YouTube, Twitter and Flickr.

“Through social media, CPSC can directly reach millions of the moms, dads and others who need our safety information the most,” said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum.

As part of the Tip-Over Education Campaign, the agency is warning about the dangers of unstable furniture through a video, blogging and podcasting. It says injuries or deaths can occur when children climb onto, fall against or pull themselves up on television stands, shelves, bookcases, dressers, desks, chests and appliances.

Recent revisions to voluntary standards for clothes storage units call for warning labels and additional hardware to secure the furniture to the floor or wall. In addition to anchoring furniture, the CPSC recommends placing TVs on a sturdy, low-rise base, avoiding flimsy shelves, pushing the TV as far back as possible, and placing electrical cords out of a child's reach and teaching kids not to play with them.
