J.Crew bows youth line

Staff -- Kids Today, 5/1/2006 12:00:00 AM

In response to requests from loyal customers, J.Crew has launched a children's line, dubbed crewcuts. The clothing collection for boys and girls ages 2 to 8 is a playful take on the adult collection, with cashmere sweaters, sun-washed tees and dressier ensembles for special occasions.

J.Crew briefly introduced the line in 2001 and offered a limited collection of sweaters for the 2005 holiday season.

Crewcuts mimics the adult line with the iconic J.Crew designs of washed patchwork madras, argyle, lightweight chino as well as animal embroideries and kid-friendly graphics.

"We are going after a J.Crew style that our customers really love for themselves and want for their kids," said Millard Drexler, chairman and CEO of J.Crew. "Until now, we feel that the kids market has been missing a certain sophistication, price and quality that we hope to provide."

The children's line is now available in 10 "shop-in-shop" J.Crew locations including Greenwich and Westport, Conn.; McLean, Va.; Edina, Minn.; Charlotte, N.C.,; Pasadena, San Diego and Corte Madera, Calif.; Chestnut Hill, Mass.; and Oakbrook, Ill. The first freestanding crewcuts is scheduled to open this month in the Northpark Center in Dallas. Crewcuts' Web site, crewcutkids.com, launched April 1.
