Furniture targets sophisticated looks

At a market dominated by baby products, furniture companies at the ABC Kids Expo found plenty of interest in their designs that were suited to older kids.
Many of the companies offered cribs that would work for newborns, but have case pieces that will last for several years thanks to their styling. If the look is too juvenile, then children will tire of the group in a few years.
Sydney Cavanaugh, a designer with Wheeless & Associates, designed pieces for Bassett Furniture's Bassettbaby line. She said, "I was trying to think outside the box — sophisticated but still for a baby."
Creations drew attention with April, its most contemporary look to date, in a Newport Cherry or espresso finish. Green Frog Art also had some new contemporary-influenced pieces in its Mod Frog group, while LaJobi had Metro in a cherry or licorice finish.
Some exhibitors, including Muniré and Young America, showed a pier wall system where bookcases can bunch around the convertible crib or a dresser. Young America's version has two styles of bridge. One has open shelving on top for books or toys; the second has the same storage on top, but also has an adjustable shelf below that is in easy reach of a changing station.
Green Frog Art debuted a contemporary look with its Mod Frog collection crafted from zebra wood.
