Come on, get happy

It’s hard to believe that another High Point Market is upon us already.

It’s hard to believe that another High Point Market is upon us already.

But, sure as the robins return and daffodils bloom, we know High Point is right around the corner.

And it’s going to be a great one, I believe.

The winter gift markets were overwhelmingly upbeat, and they were followed by a spring N.Y. textiles market that left many vendors smiling. In fact, some are projecting dramatic increases over not only 2009, but 2008 as well. Check out what they told us in the youth bedding feature beginning on page 30.

While housing remains a big issue in the overall economy — and the one aspect that still doesn’t seem to be showing many signs of improvement — there are a lot of other indicators that are trending well.

If we can start to get some decent weather, I predict the crowds will start returning to shopping sooner rather than later.

But what are they going to find once they get to your store? Is the merchandise tired? Is your sales floor boring? Is it in need of the proverbial spring cleaning?

When the shoppers come back, they will do so with a keener eye. They will want to be inspired and cheered up by what they find. If they see the same-old, same-old — merchandise that’s been sitting around for the last year or so — they will move on. And they may never come back. You always hear that a first impression is the most important. I believe that the last impression is even more important.

Look at it this way: The birds start over every spring with new digs, even though there are plenty of seemingly perfectly good nests still sticking around from last year. Take your cues from nature and get freshened up.

And that includes you and your employees, too. It’s easy to be down-in-the-dumps with everything that’s gone on, but people shopping for children are looking for happy. We should all work harder on being happy. Your customers will notice.
