Consumer confidence down, unemployment stable
Buying plans and consumer confidence

According to the BIGresearch Diffusion Index, the 90-day spending outlook for most consumer products is down. There's a small silver lining for kids retailers however. Prospects for children's spending are up, as are spending for toys and games. Plans for spending for decorative home furnishings in general are flat and furniture is down. Columbus-based BIGresearch calculates the diffusion index by subtracting those who say they'll spend less from those who say they'll spend more.
Consumer confidence has been hard hit by rising gas prices and falling housing prices in spite of indications of a strong economy otherwise. The most recent RBC CASH (Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household) Index, conducted in early June, resumed a downward trend after a brief resurgence in May. The survey, which measured the attitudes of 1,000 Americans found respondents much less confident about their current situation and only mildly optimistic about their future prospects. As a result of these mixed views, the overall RBC CASH Index stands at 81.4 for June 2007, six points below May's 87.1 level.
"In spite of continued jobs growth, U.S. consumer sentiment is weighed down by several factors," said T. J. Marta, Economic and Fixed Income strategist for RBC Capital Markets. "Mortgage rates have spiked to their highest level since last July, gasoline prices remain above $3 per gallon going into the driving season and equity prices have begun to waver after two months of gains."
