September is Baby Safety Month, sponsored annually by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. Each year, JPMA focuses on a specific topic for this month, such as the dangers of a used crib; safe use and selection of various infant products; and safe sleeping habits.
This year, the group is helping educate parents and caregivers on the importance of buying products that are JPMA Certified, which means they have undergone an extra set of rigorous testing.
Once a product passes laboratory testing, it is marked with the distinctive JPMA Certification Seal – ensuring consumers that the product was built with the highest safety standards in mind. The JPMA Certified Seal on a product’s packaging provides parents and caregivers with added assurance that the product exceeds the traditional standards of quality, safety, and functionality.
For more than 30 years, JPMA’s Certification Program has helped guide consumers toward smarter, safer juvenile product purchases. More than 2,000 products are JPMA Certified in 20 categories.
The program consists of voluntary standards developed by ASTM International. Manufacturers, retailers, other industry members, consumer groups and staff from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission are involved in the development of the standards.
Retailers can promote Baby Safety Month in various ways. JPMA offers several items that can be downloaded from its Web site, like banners, logos and an image of the seal. Baby Safety Month can be promoted in-store by holding car seat clinics, safety seminars, contests or meet-and-greet events with expectant parents or grandparents. Have customers turn in old or used items like cribs, car seats, high chairs and play yards, then donate them to a local police or fire department for use in training exercises. Check with local media to see if there is a parent or family section where you can advertise. Visit jmpa.org to order some Safe & Sound for Baby brochures to distribute to customers.
Mary Bauer, president and founder of Bratt Décor, will be helping to educate parents and caregivers on the importance of buying products that are safe, sound and certified. As parents prepare for a new baby there are many things to consider and the task of setting up a nursery and preparing for baby’s arrival can be overwhelming. As an industry insider and parent of two, Bauer speaks on safety tips, regulations, and what to consider when shopping for baby.
We would love your feedback!
