IKEA officially broke ground for its future 293,000 square-foot store in Sunrise, Fla. The store is slated to open in Summer 2007 with an Orlando store slated for Fall 2007.
The 20-acre IKEA site is located in the planned 25-acre ‘Gateway at Sawgrass,’ a new retail center being built by Ft. Lauderdale-based Stiles Corporation. The future IKEA Sunrise will be adjacent to 40,000 square feet of first-class specialty retail shops and restaurants to be developed by Stiles on more than five acres along N.W. 136th Avenue.
“We are thrilled to be entering South Florida with this perfect opportunity in Sunrise,” said David Iemolo, IKEA real estate director. “Stiles’ long-standing commitment to this location, paired with the City’s dedication to quality development, is resulting in a distinctive, high-profile project. Today’s milestone is another major step forward to achieving that goal.”
There currently are more than 240 IKEA stores in 34 countries, including 28 in the U.S., where the company plans to open three to five stores a year. Other U.S. stores are being planned in: Brooklyn, NY; Draper, UT; Dublin, CA; Orlando, FL; Portland, OR; Round Rock, TX; Somerville, MA; and West Chester, OH.
In other company news, Ikea will build a 1 million-square-foot distribution center in Pierce County, Wash. allowing the retailer to receive goods at the Port of Tacoma and to manage its inventory and to distribute product to stores throughout North America, with a focus on Ikea stores in the Pacific Northwest.
The first phase of the project consists of an 834,000 square-foot facility to be operational by Spring 2008, with a potential future expansion of almost 220,000 square feet after the initial building is up and running. About 150 jobs will be created at the facility.
