Nook took a highly sustainable approach to the design and manufacture of its Pebble mattress. |
LOS ANGELES—Nook Sleep Systems has created a revolutionary patent-pending infant mattress and crib bedding system that creates a highly breathable, entirely non-toxic sleeping environment for infants.
“Infant mattresses are typically made using toxic chemicals that off-gas and harsh materials which limit breathability inside the crib,” said Chris Svensrud, president. “We felt compelled to create a smarter solution that could improve the lives of babies and parents alike.”
The heart of the Nook system is the Pebble mattress, whose 100% natural latex core provides optimal ergonomic support and thermal regulation, while a unique airflow layer and organic wool fire barrier work in concert to increase oxygen circulation inside the crib.
The Pebble Wrap is the outer layer – and it is removable for machine washing. It features a woven, asymmetrical, pillowed surface that facilitates airflow while wicking unwanted moisture and heat away from the child. The Pebble Wrap uses a patented fabric that repels fluids and prevents oils and stains from sticking to its surface. Messes can be easily wiped away, eliminating the need for a separate mattress pad. The Pebble Wrap uses patented, natural technology to eliminate fungus, mold, odors and other nursery pathogens.
“New parents spend so much time and money finding the right crib, yet are relatively clueless when it comes to choosing the right mattress – the surface on which their children spend three-quarters of their young lives,” said Matt Jarvis, chief marketing officer. “We hope to start a new conversation around the importance of this environment.”
Nook Sleep Systems is committed to smart, sustainable design and manufacturing. All products are made in the United States using a range of organic and renewable materials including certified natural rubber, GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool, environmentally superior eucalyptus fiber, and zinc and silver ion with natural anti-microbial properties. Nook’s bright, modern designs are achieved through all-natural, low impact processes.
Nook’s first collection consists of the Pebble mattress, available in six vibrant colors with additional covers sold separately, as well as an array of organic sheets, blankets, sleep sacks and other crib accessories that further enhance the safety and health benefits of the mattress. The system was designed to allow for countless mix-and-match style combinations.
The full Nook system is available this month, both online and through select high-end infant retailers. The mattress retails for $610.
Nook is a partnership of three independent companies: organic bedding producer Pixel Organics; advertising and design shop 72andSunny, which helped launch Bugaboo worldwide; and Deep River, an investment partnership.
It is true that polyester is flammable, so too are cotton
and many other fibers used widely in bedding
materials. Nook's polyester is layered between non-
toxic and other natural flame-resistant fiber layers
which together are designed to pass standardized
Federal flammability testing. When used in the right
way, polyester can be a wonderful non-toxic material
as part of Nook's unique and considered designs.
