Right before we went to press with this issue we learned of the new dates for the second Las Vegas Furniture Market for 2009. World Market Center has moved the July show to Sept. 14-17.
The ABC Kids Expo is slated for Sept. 13-16; New York Home Fashions Market is Sept. 14-18 and Kind & Jugend is Sept. 17-20.
As the editor of a magazine that covers all of these shows and considers them all important to our industry, I have to scratch my head.
It makes me wonder how these overlapping dates will affect retailers, manufacturers and others hoping to attend these shows.
From my side of the desk, I know it’s going to be hard enough for us to cover all of those markets, and we aren’t shopping for a store or trying to sell product. So the question becomes this; how are the retailers going to do it? How are the manufacturers going to be in two, three or even four places during the same week?
I realize not every manufacturer exhibits at each of these markets. I also realize that every retailer doesn’t shop each of these markets. But, many do.
Each venue wants to tout that their goal is to make their particular market as buyer-friendly as possible and yet is it really buyer friendly to have four major markets during the same week?
Travel logistics aside, how else might this impact the industry? Based on the current reality, we’ll have a plethora of debuts in the first quarter, a smattering over the summer and then another plethora in the fourth quarter. What will that do to retailers’ open to buy come January 2010?
I’m just looking at the big picture and right now it’s pretty fuzzy. What do you think?
We would love your feedback!
